So we have all probably heard such quotes as “Goals are dreams with deadlines”, but how do we make such a statement a reality? Well let’s begin with the types of goals and the ways we can set about achieving them.
Most people think of goals as long term ventures, setting their sights on such things as, I want to be a size ?, by such and such a date. These goals although great, can, over a long period become just be too big or too loosely formed or just not have enough specific steps to become a reality. So how do we prevent becoming over whelmed by the goal to the point that the goal it’s self is so large that it seems unachievable and you give it away for disappointment?.
First it is important to ask yourself “is the goal really something you want to achieve”?. You may have an idea spawned from somebody else’s ideas or point of view. This will not sustain you in the long term, the goal has to be something you really want or chances are you won’t achieve it. “If you believe, you will achieve” Anonymous
Second thing is to set small goals, perhaps something as simple as “today I am going to phone the gym to find out about memberships” or “Today I am going to drink 8 glasses of water”. The point is that not every goal has to have grandeur about it, it may be a simple step towards the larger picture but a step all the same. This often works really well, particularly when your goal is long term in nature. Setting yourself these daily tasks helps build confidence to the point that you can achieve even the largest of goals.“The journey of a thousand miles, begins with the first step” Eastern Philosopher
Third is to write your goals down or voice them to someone you can trust to support you along the way. Some professionals specialize in helping you with this, such as Wellness Coaches & Naturopaths. These services can be a valuable tool not just in realizing your goals, but setting them to time frames with specific steps. Mmmmmmm can’t think of a quote so let’s make one up. “If it’s not written in stone, it may blow away in the slightest breeze” NAFC
Fourth is, don’t become discouraged. Many things pop in and out of our lives that can push us slightly off course. The change of your daily routine, unexpected disruptions can all work to keep you from achieving your goal. The important thing is to stay focused and work around these, and if you do fall off track, put yourself back on and don’t punish yourself over it. This is where sticking to the first three steps really helps. “Many of life’s failures come to those, who were so close to success when they gave up” Thomas Edison
So in closing there are many different ways to establish goals in one’s life.
The key is to 1st Believe
2nd Take Small Steps
3rd Voice your goal in some way
4th Keep at it even when there are obstacles in your way
